A sprinkler system can have a working timer, green controller lights, and plenty of water at the meter, yet still leave brown grass along the curb or soggy mulch beds near the house. The missing piece is often pressure. Proper irrigation pressure requirements determine whether each sprinkler head sprays the right distance, distributes water evenly, and supports a healthier lawn without wasting water.

For homeowners in St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and nearby Northeast Florida communities, getting pressure right matters year-round. Sandy soil, summer heat, mixed turf types, flower beds, mature trees, and changing water demands all put a system to the test. A system that was installed years ago may need an adjustment or repair long before every component fails.

What Irrigation Pressure Requirements Mean

Irrigation pressure is measured in pounds per square inch, or PSI. It is the force that pushes water through your pipes and out of each sprinkler nozzle. Flow is different. Flow measures how much water is available, usually in gallons per minute. A system needs enough of both to run each zone correctly.

Every sprinkler head and nozzle is designed to operate within a recommended pressure range. Pop-up spray heads commonly work best around 30 PSI at the head, while many rotor heads need roughly 40 to 50 PSI. Drip irrigation generally operates at much lower pressure, often around 15 to 30 PSI, because too much pressure can damage tubing or force fittings apart.

Those numbers are useful starting points, not a one-size-fits-all answer. Pressure at the water source is not the same as pressure at the sprinkler head. Pipes, valves, filters, elevation changes, and the number of heads running in a zone all reduce pressure along the way. That is why a system can look fine near the backflow device but perform poorly across the yard.

Signs Your Lawn May Have a Pressure Problem

Homeowners usually notice the results before they identify the cause. Dry strips between sprinkler patterns, weak misting heads, water spraying onto the driveway, or puddles around certain heads can all point to incorrect pressure.

Low pressure often causes heads to barely rise, rotors to stop turning, and spray patterns to fall short of their intended coverage. The grass may turn thin or brown in spots even though the timer runs regularly. It can also make a sprinkler zone take longer to water, which is not always a good fix. Longer run times can overwater the areas that are receiving water while the dry areas remain thirsty.

High pressure creates a different set of problems. Instead of producing larger droplets that reach the lawn, spray heads may create a fine mist. In Florida heat and wind, that mist can drift away before it reaches the soil. High pressure may also lead to fogging, broken fittings, popped-off nozzles, and wasted water on sidewalks, siding, or vehicles.

A quick look during a scheduled cycle can reveal a lot. Watch each zone for even coverage, consistent head height, and water landing where it belongs. If one area looks noticeably different from the rest, do not assume the controller is the problem.

Why Pressure Changes Across Your Property

Pressure is not fixed simply because your home has municipal water. Demand can change at different times of day, especially in established neighborhoods where multiple properties may be using water. A pressure reading taken at noon may not match the pressure available during an early-morning irrigation cycle.

Your own plumbing layout matters, too. A long pipe run to the backyard loses more pressure than a short run near the meter. Smaller pipes, partially closed valves, aging components, mineral buildup, clogged filters, and leaks all restrict water movement. A damaged pipe underground may not create a dramatic puddle, but it can reduce the pressure available to every head after the leak.

Elevation plays a role as well. Even modest grade changes can affect performance. A sprinkler zone at the bottom of a sloped yard may deliver more pressure than heads at the top. In flat coastal areas, this issue may be less noticeable, but landscape berms, raised beds, and changes around patios can still affect coverage.

Matching Pressure to the Right Irrigation Equipment

A well-designed system groups sprinkler heads with similar pressure and precipitation needs in the same zone. Spray heads should generally not share a zone with rotors because they apply water at different rates and typically require different operating pressure. Mixing them can leave one part of the lawn overwatered while another is under-watered.

Drip lines deserve their own attention. They are an excellent choice for foundation plantings, shrubs, container areas, and mulch beds because they deliver water closer to plant roots. But drip zones need proper filtration and pressure regulation. Connecting them directly to a high-pressure lawn zone can shorten the life of the tubing and create uneven watering.

Nozzle selection is equally important. A nozzle controls the amount of water a head releases and the distance it can cover. Replacing a broken nozzle with the wrong size may seem harmless, but it can throw off the balance of an entire zone. The system may have enough pressure, yet the distribution will still be poor.

Checking Irrigation Pressure the Right Way

A pressure gauge is a useful diagnostic tool, but accurate diagnosis goes beyond one reading. An irrigation professional can measure static pressure when the water is off and dynamic pressure while a zone is running. The difference helps reveal whether the system is losing too much pressure under normal demand.

The inspection should also include the backflow assembly, shutoff valves, zone valves, sprinkler heads, nozzles, filters, and visible signs of leakage. Technicians should check whether heads are tilted, buried under turf, blocked by shrubs, or damaged by mowing equipment. A head that is partially covered can look like a pressure failure when it is really a maintenance issue.

For a full property evaluation, each zone should be run separately. This makes it possible to see whether the issue affects the whole system or only one section. If one zone is weak while the others perform normally, the cause may be a valve issue, a leak, a clog, or too many heads assigned to that zone.

Common Fixes for Low or High Pressure

The right repair depends on what the inspection finds. Low pressure caused by a clogged nozzle may require a simple cleaning or replacement. A leaking line, failing valve, or damaged sprinkler connection needs a more targeted repair. If the zone was designed with more demand than the water supply can handle, it may need to be divided into smaller zones.

High pressure may call for a pressure-regulating sprinkler head, a pressure regulator on the zone, or adjustments to the system design. In some cases, correcting nozzle sizes and head spacing solves what appears to be a larger pressure issue. The goal is not to chase the highest PSI. The goal is even, efficient coverage at the pressure your equipment was built to use.

Avoid solving pressure issues by simply increasing run times. Florida lawns can develop shallow roots, disease pressure, and runoff problems when they receive frequent or excessive watering. A properly operating system should apply water evenly enough that your schedule can support the lawn without flooding beds or sending water down the street.

When to Call for Irrigation Repair

Call for service when sprinkler heads do not pop up, rotors stop rotating, a zone suddenly looks weak, or water is collecting in areas that used to drain normally. You should also schedule an inspection after landscaping changes, new mulch installation, a hardscape project, or significant hedge growth. Plants and outdoor improvements can block spray patterns over time.
